La canción alcanzó el primer puesto en la lista Billboard de EE.UU. el 29 de diciembre de 1973, tres meses después de la muerte del cantante y compositor JIM CROCE, ocurrida en un accidente de avión el 20 de septiembre de 1973. Fue el tercer título póstumo número uno en el Hot 100.

"Time in a bottle" fue escrita originalmente para el hijo de CROCE, AJ; y apareció en su primer álbum en 1972 "You don't mess around with Jim".
